The Long Road Begins
Night songs of nocturnal woodland creatures rang in young Stavrossâ ears. Crickets, frogs, and the occasional owl sang him a cheerless dirge. His head ached. The young man slowly opened his eyes. Tall pines and thick oaks looked down upon him in the dark. Pale moonlight filtered in past the trees illuminating the forest in an eerie glow. He lay on his back, looking up at the darkened world around him. Stavross remained disoriented a moment, until it all came flooding back to him in a torrent of pain and anguish.
Stavross lay motionless as the memory of the last few days washed over him. Dieshaâs betrayal stung him hardest. Despondency worthy of a dying man fell over him as he thought about his lost love. It had all been a lie, or had it? Sheâd lied to the captain, to her father and to him, but why? Did she really love him? Was her betrayal forced upon her by her overbearing father? Or had she been using him all along? Stavross wanted to believe she really loved him, his heart needed to believe. But his head insisted it was otherwise, and heâd been played for a fool all along. Why would a rich pretty girl like her want anything to do with a low-born ugly farm boy like him? He fought back the tears welling up within him as his mind and soul wrestled with the possible truth.
Brade DâVinnâs face suddenly appeared within the young manâs mind. Thoughts and feelings for Diesha fled before Bradeâs aspect. She appeared now as she had when Stavross was young. He remembered her cheerful smile. No matter how miserable or angry heâd been, one look from her was able to lift his spirits from whatever depths theyâd fallen. He recalled the gentle way she held him. Brade's warm embrace had always comforted Stavross in a way nothing else ever could. She could hold him for hours, even as a squirming, hyperactive child and heâd be still for her. He longed for her now. More than ever, he needed to feel his motherâs soothing arms about him. The tears he fought back for Diesha began to flow for his mother.
Stavross stood up, carefully inspecting his new surroundings. He was disoriented, knowing only that he stood within a small copse of trees. There were small patches of woods around Tomerel, left-overs of forgotten forests that had long been swept away by the inevitable approach of mankind. A light twinkled in the distance between the dark oaks, dancing in the night like a midnight wisp. Stavross moved between the trees toward this beacon, emerging from the tiny forest into a wide prairie. The many tiny lights of a small farming village shined dimly in the night. Even from this far away under a dark sky, Stavross knew his hometown.
He began to walk slowly toward the village. Each step brought back painful reminders that he was no longer welcome there. His feet seemed mired in the same misery as his soul.
